Nigel Reo-Coker concedes he learned to appreciate West Ham the hard way. 

Nigel Reo-Coker had a fractured relationship with West Ham United fans and has admitted he didn't appreciate the club while he was there.

Former Hammers skipper Nigel Reo Coker
came within minutes of eclipsing Hammers great Bobby Moore as the youngest captain in the club's history to lift the FA Cup.

Steven Gerrard stole that honour away from him, though, in that epic final against Liverpool back in 2006 and the rest as they say is history.

A firm favourite with Hammers fans, Reo-Coker enjoyed a memorable three and a half years in East London.

But it ended somewhat acrimoniously as his relationship with the club's fans soured in the wake of suggestions from manager Alan Curbishley of a 'Baby Bentley Brigade' at the club during their fight against relegation.

Reo-Coker risked the wrath of supporters when he cupped his ear to the crowd after scoring at the Boleyn Ground.

He moved on to Aston Villa after the club's Great Escape was sealed by Carlos Tevez in 2007 and was booed on his return.

And in an interview with the whufc.com, Reo-Coker - now 32 and without a club - has conceded he did not appreciate what he had at West Ham until he left.

“I can say this now because I’ve been away for a few years and I’ve travelled around a bit and been to different places – I truly realise how big and special this club is," Reo-Coker told West Ham TV.

“It’s the part of my career that has really stayed with me. It’s something that I’ve never forgotten and it’s something that I truly appreciate.

"Everywhere I go, I’m always remembered and recognised from my time at West Ham. There have been so many Hammers fans I have met worldwide, and that’s when you understand how big the fanbase is.”

The former midfielder's words will not be lost on West Ham fans who appreciate what he did for the club during his time there.

He was the club's brave young captain who helped lead them back to the Premier League under Alan Pardew and then onto a strong finish in the Premier League and that FA Cup final.

That season also saw West Ham qualify for what was then the UEFA Cup, although their stay in the competition was shortlived after a heavy two-legged defeat to Palermo.

Despite only being 32, Reo-Coker has been out of action for over a year after having his contract at Major League Soccer side Montreal Impact terminated by mutual consent in January 2016.

Two former Premier League players this week is on trial in Lillestrom.

Åråsen club do not want to confirm the names of the players, but according to local newspaper Rome Blad should involve Englishmen Nigel Reo-Coker (32) and Luke Moore (31).

LSK coach Arne Erlandsen confirmed to the newspaper that a total of three new players will emerge training Tuesday, but nor did he mention names.

- There are players who want to come here to show off. It is important for us to have good trainings. Now it suited us fine to have some players since Bonke (Innocent) is out injured, and we also have Petter Mathias (Olsen) and Erik Tobias (Sandberg) on national teams, says Erlandsen.

Not that I am a worldwide authority on football players but I thought he was a good player.

Around the time of the 2006 Cup Final he fell in with some real fucking cunts away from football, I always thought it went downhill from there.

Had his head turned by paper talk that summer and his attitude was never the same. I wonder if he ever thinks about what he could have achieved if he'd kept working at his game rather than thinking he'd made it.

December 17, 2006: Nigel bagged the lone goal against the mancs at our place. best xmas present in an otherwise shit holiday season. I'll always remember him fondly for that.

Went to every round in that cup run... great great times and some superb days out... even the shit boring Bolton game at their place was a right laugh.. blimey I even remember Pards' resting players on the Saturday game v Pompey so that we took the Man City QF seriously.... Imagine that happening now !! Brilliant days... and that includes the final.

My favourite season 2005/6. And I went to pretty much every game home and away in 1986.

We won 3-1 I think and Teddy scored as well.

I punched the ceiling and broke a finger when he scored against Blackburn in our first game back in the prem. What a good season that was. Better than last season by a mile but it seems to have been largely forgotten.

Mullins was average at first, but improved a tiny bit every match he played for us, which by the time the final was coming up, he would have been my first name on the sheet, which is why I was gutted for him and us that he missed out because, partly his temper, but mainly because of the greasy cunt playing for teh scouse....I've forgotten his name, but they both missed out, if I remember correctly.

I'd always thought that playing for a move or not putting your all in for a club was a myth before I saw Reo-Coker put in a couple of shockers after his agent stormed into West Ham and demanded wage parity for 'the captain' with (I can't really remember) Tevez or maybe Deano and was told in no uncertain terms to fuck off.

A decent player for us on the whole but never as good as he thought he was. I thought Pardew was mad making him captain at such a young age. I must have read about ten articles in the papers about him being really clever because he read The Art Of War. If only they'd known that the only other book he'd ever read was the Argos catalogue.

I instinctively knew he was a cunt because every article was about him and he never ever seemed to talk about the club he captained. That's a bit of a glaring omission and a sign of a monster ego.

If I had to point at one player who was responsible for us getting to the final in 2006 he wouldn't even make my top 5. Dean Ashton was the kid. I used to wake up on the day of a trip to somewhere like Everton and think 'we'll probably lose there' and then I'd read that Deano was fit and anything seemed possible.

Reo-Coker was a runner in a football shirt by comparison.

This would have meant more if he was being interviewed by Sky or a paper, but he's hardly going to say anything cunty in an interview with West Ham TV is he?

Well he could have declined to do the interview if he was still bitter ??

Fair play to him for it and I will take a different view of him from this.

NRC was a fantastic athlete which for a couple of seasons made up for being a very average footballer. Wasn't a sustainable situation though.
